The Nottoway County Public School System is guided by a five-member elected school board and its chief officer, the Superintendent of Schools. One school board member is elected from each of the same five election districts as the Board of Supervisors. School board members are elected to four year terms. The school board delegates the daily operation of the school system to the superintendent of schools.
The school board meets every second Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the mini-auditorium at the Nottoway High School. Meetings are open to the public.
The school board oversees the school budget, which averages approximately 75% of all county expenditures. The school board does not have the power to tax in order to raise the resources needed to operate the schools; rather, it works with the Board of Supervisors to secure the needed operating funds.
The school system educates approximately 2,400 to 2,500 K-12 students per year in six schools.
