Nottoway County collects household and commercial waste produced by its residents and businesses. It also operates its own modern, state-of-the-art landfill facility. Nottoway County does not accept waste from any out-of-county source, nor does it accept any type of hazardous waste.

Nottoway County citizens are able to dispose of their household waste in several ways.

1. Residents of Nottoway’s three towns are provided pick up service by their town.  The town takes the collected waste to the county’s landfill for disposal.

2. Nottoway County operates five convenience centers across the county to accept household waste.  These centers are for Nottoway County residents and landowners only and identification is required by county personnel.

The convenience center sites are located at:

The convenience center hours are:

Sunday 2:00 pm – 5:30 pm
Monday 8:30 am – 6:00 pm
Tuesday Closed
Wednesday 8:30 am – 6:00 pm
Thursday Closed
Friday 8:30 am – 6:00 pm
Saturday 7:00 am – 5:30 pm

3 . Citizens also have the ability to take their refuse directly to the Nottoway County landfill during regular working hours.

Those Hours Are As Follows
Monday-Saturday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Citizens with tires, appliances, yard or arboreal (tree/brush) waste must take their waste directly to the landfill. It cannot be deposited into a trash collection box.

Commercial users of the landfill are required to pay tipping fees based upon the weight of the load.

Vehicles containing waste are weighed at the landfill prior to emptying and then after. Charges are determined by the weight and the type of waste deposited. The tipping fee schedule is as follows:

General Refuse $42.00 per ton
Tires $200.00 per ton
Sludge $104.00 per ton

Use and operation of the County Landfill shall be subject to the following rules and regulations:

  1. The landfill shall be open Monday through Saturday – 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
  2. All vehicles must check with a landfill employee prior to dumping (in the landfill) and shall be subject to inspection.
  3. All waste materials must be deposited in the appropriate areas as directed by the landfill employee, and must be separated according to type of waste.
  4. No stumps over four (4) inches shall be deposited in the landfill.
  5. All large haulers (municipal, institutional or commercial) must arrive no later than3:00 PM.
  6. Scavenging shall be allowed only in the white goods area between the hours of 3:30PM and 4:30 PM. No scavenging allowed on the “working face” of the garbage /refuse area.
  7. Only waste generated within the County shall be deposited at the landfill.

Nottoway County operates its waste management department with a staff of 6 to 8 employees.

The current landfill, opened in 1995, is regularly monitored for compliance with Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) rules. A monthly report is presented to the Board of Supervisors at each of their regular meetings.

Funding for the operation of the Nottoway County landfill is obtained by tipping fees, a utility tax on electric meters and telephones on all county residences and businesses.

The Nottoway County landfill is expected to be utilized until filled, in about the year 2027.
